The University of Akureyri (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) in Iceland will lead WP4. Established in 1987, the university is located in North Iceland, serving Akureyri and its rural areas. Renowned for academic excellence and strong industrial ties, it plays a pivotal role in the region’s economic development towards a knowledge-based society.
Offering diverse opportunities in private and public sectors, the university prioritizes progressive teaching and internationally acclaimed research. Focus areas include Icelandic society, economy, Arctic, and European issues, addressing common challenges like globalization and immigration. With a history of Erasmus projects and international collaborations, the university boasts experience in global initiatives. Since 2008, its Environmental Council has actively tackled environmental concerns, earning recognition such as the Green Flag from the Land Protection Agency in 2013. Moreover, the university signed the Climate Declaration of Reykjavík and Festa in 2016, committing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation. These efforts reflect the university’s ongoing dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
